A man was killed in a clash that broke out between two Trinamool Congress groups in Mandarboni village of Illambazar at Birbhum on Friday evening.
The deceased, identified as Sheikh Zakir Hussain (32), was a party block president, and had been attending a block-level programme organised by area president Niyamat Ali.
According to locals, a supporter of ex-area president Phul Babu started raising slogans against Niyamat Ali.
Within minutes, the situation went out of control and a mob attacked Zakir – a supporter of Niyamat Ali – allegedly with a wooden stick. He was then immediately taken to the local block hospital with a head injury.
He was referred to SSKM hospital Kolkata, but succumbed while being taken there on Saturday.
“An FIR is being lodged, and we have detained three people in this case. Investigation is on,” SP Birbhum N Sudheer Kumar told The Sunday Express.
According to police sources, the family of the deceased has alleged that 14 TMC members were behind the clash and murder.
The police declined to comment on whether the clash was political or not, but sources said that one Sheikh Halish has been detained as the main accused.
This is not the first time that Birbhum has witnessed an intra-party clash. Locals allege that the two groups keep clashing to take control of the area. A similar incident had taken place last month, where eleven persons were injured in a clash between two Trinamool factions at Chanchal in Malda district.
