It’s a Zenfone kind of day – first the Selfie and Selfie Pro, now the base Zenfone 4 and a smaller version of the Zenfone 4 Max.
The Zenfone 4 ZE554KL seems to have inched up to basically flagship-level pricing – €500. The spec sheet feels a bit on the light side for five bills, though.
We start with a 5.5” 1080p screen (IPS or AMOLED, it’s not clear) with 2.5D Gorilla Glass on top and a metal body. The rear houses a dual 12MP + 8MP camera, the front an 8MP selfie cam. Inside is 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, plus a dedicated microSD slot (with two separate nano SIM slots). Not bad, but the Snapdragon 630 chipset means that OnePlus can breathe easy.

The Zenfone 4 Max ZC554KL, which was announced in July, seems to have been rebranded “Max Plus”. The new non-Plus version, the Zenfone 4 Max ZC520KL, has a smaller screen and lower price tag – 5.2” vs. 5.5” and €230 vs. €250 respectively.

The smaller model switches to an older Snapdragon 425 (from the 430) and to a smaller battery with a 4,100mAh capacity (down from 5,000mAh). The smaller screen is still a 720p IPS, though, and the camera arrangement is the same – 13MP + 5MP on the back, single 8MP on the front.
