Micro bags, bucket hats and biker shorts. 2019 was a year ruled by trends that were not very easy to pull off. But, 2019 has also officially ended and so has an entire decade. So in the interest of shopping chicer, cheaper and responsibly in 2020, we’ve rounded up trends, brands and (seemingly) positive changes that will continue to shape fashion in 2020.
PRE-LOVED CLOTHING
As we welcome a new decade in our lives, there are new solutions to the age-old problem called ‘I have nothing to wear.’ Moreover, the stigma attached with buying pre-owned fashion is disappearing as sustainability is becoming more than a buzzword. In fact, celebrities are taking the ‘old is gold’ philosophy to the red carpet.
RED CARPET REVOLUTION
Julia Roberts created a stir while wearing a gown from the Valentino archives in 2001. And, Kim Kardashian wore a second-hand Azzedine Alaïa to Paris fashion week and a second-hand Thierry Mugler gown to an award ceremony. Recently, Gwyneth Paltrow arrived in a vintage Valentino gown from 1963 at the 2019 Emmy’s. Plus, a wide array of Indian portals like Styleflip and LabelCentric sell second-hand clothing, including the wardrobes of Bollywood dreamboats Sonam Kapoor and Dia Mirza.

THE RETURN OF VINTAGE
Along with pre-owned fashion, vintage fashion is making a comeback. ELLE India’s recent cover with Christy Turlington also featured an archival piece made by Sabyasachi. And, there are a lot of cool brands, like Carol’s Shop, Bodements and weardisco.very that promise to give you a fresh outfit inspiration with vintage clothes. Some of these clothes are budgeted too. What’s more, the selection of clothing with these brands is super hip (thank us later).

IT’S OKAY TO FEEL BLUE
Because it’s the Pantone colour of the year. And, you will be seeing much more of it in fashion in 2020. The classic blue will get many exciting iterations in knitwear and revamped power suits. The colour was chosen for its dependability and stability. So here’s hoping the royal shade brings some peace into our lives. Amen.

BRA TOPS
Bras are utilitarian and often sexy. But, they can now be worn like a regular T-shirt. From Katie Holmes’ Insta-famous cashmere bra cardigan to Kristen Stewart wearing a bra-like top with her pantsuit, this is the new underwear/outwear revolution.

COMFORT WILL REIGN SUPREME
We’re living in a time where young women still have to protest to wear leggings to college. But, don’t get disheartened. From dad sneakers to large puffer jackets, comfort will remain stylish in 2020.

LEATHER FOR SPRING
If you thought leather is only good enough to look tough, you’re wrong. Buttery, soft leather will be the highlight for fashion in 2020. From pleated leather skirts to outwear in bright hues, you have already seen your favourite stars wear it. Now it’s time you wear it.
